1.3 Treble Clef and Bass Clef

There are 2 basic kinds of clefs. The clef you will see on your music depends on what instrument you play or voice part you sing. (Remember the term "pitch" from the video.  Pitch refers to how high or low a note sounds.)

Treble Clef:

Treble clef is used for high pitched instruments and voices.

Bass Clef:

Bass clef is used for lower pitched instruments and voices.

If lower pitched instruments and voices used the treble clef, the notes appear far below the staff and make the music extremely difficult to read.  Conversely, if higher pitched instruments and voices used the bass clef, the notes would appear high above the staff.

Each line and space of the staff indicates how high or how low a pitch is and represents the letter name of the pitches of the staff.
